Make money from app

Due to continuos google updates, I thought to spend some time on apps and gained knowledge after spending $$$$. After flappy bird grabbing the attention through media, many jumping into apps. So I thought to shed some light regarding apps business, as I was testing many apps for the past one year.

Note : This would be long post and i will be referring some of the services, I am using for promoting apps. I am no way affiliated to these services. I don't guarantee that you will also make same money as others do. The below post made upon my experience and any suggestions are welcome. My english wont be much good, so bear with me.

Before planning to jump into this app business, decide whether its ios or android. If you have good budget focus both the platforms, if not start with ios and i will tell you later why you should choose ios.

What you need to start with ios?

1. Good App idea

If you think your app plan is unique , search in app store for similar apps, you will be surprised that your idea was already launchedin the form of app by 

another app. Yes, you will find every idea of yours in app store. so what to do now? Best option is to find top apps and check the reviews. you will find 

some negative reviews about the app flaw. Note it down, create your app fixing the flaw.

2. $99 for developer account.

You need CC to complete the payment.

3. one inhouse coder and designer or you can outsource it through freelancer or odesk or any app development firm.


Ok now you got an app idea, what next? 

Do not start with gaming apps, its highly competitive category and you have to spend more money on promotions.

My personal suggestion is go with trivia section, if you are picking games category. Its less competitive and you can rank apps fast. 

Do not forget to make your app universal i.e it should work with iphone, ipod and ipad. 




Now my app is ready. what are the monetization methods?

1. In app purchase.
2. ads.

While developing your app, see that you have atleast 3+ in app purchases. Once you get more installs, your in app purchase will make you fortune.

Ads:


Use admob. IAD Option is available, but filling rate is less, when you have low numbers in installs. But admob fill rate will be 100%. you can also use chartboost for games, they are paying high.

Ok, now you are ready with your app and your app is live in appstore. (Note appstore approval time is 8 days.). How to get more installs and get ranked in appstore.


Before promoting your apps, you have to sign up with below sites.

The above site will help you to track the number of downloads, your app ranking in various countries, helps to understand your competitor app rankings.

The above site helps you to optimize your keywords. ios allows you to add 100 characters. you have to use it wisely. sensortower allows you 14 days free trial period, you can use it and cancel if you are not satisifed. But I suggest you to signup for atleast $77 plan, if you are serious about your app business. This will help you to track the app ranking for your keywords. This site works like any other kw tracking tool. so you can update your kws according to the rankings.

1. Do not use long tail keywords. (aso is different from seo).
2. Try to add keyword in the game title.
3. Do not use the same keyword which you used in the game title in the 100 space characters.
4. Spy the top 10 apps keywords, but do not copy all those kws and paste in your apps.
5. Never use the popular game kws in your app like angry birds, doodle jump, fruit ninja,if your app is about zombies. trust me your app wont be shown even in top 1000.

The above site is alternative to sensortower.com. The difference between both the sites is you can signup free with mobilehqdev and can trackyour kws, but you cant spy your competitor apps. If you are tight in budget use mobiledevhq.


Finally you are ready for promotion. 

Now we discuss about buying installs, reviews and ratings.

Many websites providing installs. Top sites are as follows:

1. facebook
2. admob
3. iAD
4. tapjoy.

1. facebook 

Pros:
You can target interest based cheap installs. (starts from 0.03 cents per install)

cons: 
you should know how to optimize the targeting buyers, if you are not confident search for the fb ad optimization service provided by member abracadabra.


.2. admob:

Pros:
Again, you can get cheap installs but not interest targeted. (starts from 0.03 cents per install)

Cons:
Some of the countries are not allowed to promote the apps.


3. iAD
High conversion rate, but installs cost anywhere between 0.10 cents - 0.50 cents according to the countries you targeting.


4. tapjoy:

Pros:
You can get even 10k installs per day and their support is awesome.

cons:
Min rate is 0.40 cents per install.




Ok, from all the above, which one you should use for promotion?

I suggest facebook. why? because you can target mobile users according to your apps. Initially start with low budget of $3 - $5 per day and you can increase it later according to the installs.

Wait, while targeting the device, check only ipad and not iphone or ipod, i will brief about this in few mins. 

Why Ipad, when my app is created universal including iphone and ipod?

Good question, the reason is ad reveue is more for ipad than iphone and ipod.

check the below example ss:



Both are same app, one is ipad version and another one is iphone&ipod version.

Ipad : 21,192 Request - Revenue $69.30

Iphone: 42,984 Request - Revenue $36.58

You can see for less number of request you will make double the revenue of iphone version. So while choosing the device, check ipad.
The psychological reason behind this is, ipad users tend to play or stay in your app for more time than iphone users. you got it?


Ok, now which country I should target for promoting my apps.
I suggest only the below countries for promotion in early stage , as it fetch you more revenue in terms of ads and also inapps.

USA, UK, Australia, Canada, Spain, Switzerland, Singapore, Italy, France, Japan, south korea, sweden and Russia. 

There is also another reason to focus in promoting ipad apps, competition is somewhat less and can rank your apps for top 50 in many countries.



Now, let us see how this app ranking works?

you have optimized your keywords, optimized your desc, still your app is not showing up in first 500 or 1000. 

surprised? now we compare this app ranking with website ranking.

For ranking a site you will optimize a site with good title, content and keywords, but your site will not rank immediately. you will be building backlinks, sharing in social sites etc etc for ranking.

same goes here, from my test and experience, I see kw rankings and also app ranking will improve depends upon the installs and ratings.

Yes, when I have xxx number of installs per day, i can see my kws ranking also improving day by day. For every 5 star review my ranking improves few positions. so what i say is do not stop with aso, you need to buy installs and ratings.

Regarding installs, refer few lines above the posts. For review and ratings, go to fiverr and buy some gigs. But you should be careful while buying reviews in fiverr. Do not over do it. 

Apple is having some norms regarding reviews, for x number of installs you should have x number of reviews. I purchased 20+ reviews same day for my new app and got a warning phone call from apple. How do they find it? I got only 500 installs by that time and these reviews seems fishy. All reviews are removed.

Get one review and rating for 500+ installs. 


If you have good budget, buy large number of installs. Number of installs determines your app ranking. Say for exampe I buy 300 installs per day, my app will be moved to top 50 in united kingdom in 5 - 7 days. Buy 500+ installs you can see it will be moved to top 25 soon.

Each of my app is making $50 per day from ad revenue and in apps, which is in top 100. Buy more installs to rank well, it will fetch more natural installs and your ranking will be retained there. 

Do the Math..

$50 per day x 10 apps = $500/day. $15000/month. Not a bad money right?

Note : Do Not Build Apps from Scratch. Search in google for "buy ios app source codes". Buy it, reskin it and launch the app. In this way you can launch the apps quick and can save $$$.
